Director/Managing Director – Economics and Central Bank Strategy

Group Description: The Economics and Central Bank Strategy team is responsible for developing Evercore ISI’s economic outlook and macro policy analysis. The team operates at the intersection of macroeconomics, policy and markets globally, with particular focus on the US. In recent years the two component parts of the team each ranked number one in the Extel / Institutional Investor poll. We are now looking to strengthen the team further with a best-in-class senior hire focused on economic data research, modelling and forecasting.

The team combines rigorous macroeconomic analysis with direct market engagement and policy interpretation. Our work is followed closely by leading institutional investors, corporations, and policymakers globally. The platform offers the intellectual seriousness of a top-tier policy institution together with the pace, visibility, and influence of a premier market-facing research franchise.

What is the Position? Evercore ISI is looking for a highly experienced economist with deep technical expertise to help lead the firm’s real-time analysis of the US economy, provide differentiated thematic insights, and play a central role in shaping the macro outlook. The new hire will also develop and execute a generational upgrade of the firm’s modelling and analytical infrastructure. This person will work in close partnership with and report to the Head of Economics and Central Bank Strategy.

This role is designed for a highly experienced and technically sophisticated economist with deep analytical rigor and intellectual independence. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape market debate in real time, engage directly with major global investors and officials, and contribute to the evolution of next-generation macroeconomic analysis at a time of far-reaching structural change.

Primary Responsibilities: 

• Lead the firm's US data forecasting, real-time data filtering / analysis, and nowcasting.
• Provide thought-leadership on emerging macro themes at a time of profound structural change in the economy, and deliver technical and data-driven foundations to underpin the broader macro call.
• Partner with the Head of Economics and Central Bank Strategy and other senior contributors on the construction of the firm's US macro forecast and scenario analysis.
•  Lead a generational upgrade of the firm’s models integrating new economic thinking, AI tools and non-traditional datasets into the forecasting process.
• Build out a distinct technical-leadership identity within US economics, including thought-leading research on US data, measurement, and forecasting methodology
• Lead and mentor junior members of the team on data work and modeling.
• Engage directly with clients across the full spectrum of the financial sector, managing relationships, presenting on calls, webinars, and events, and responding to bespoke external and internal requests.
• Translate sophisticated economic and policy analysis into clear, decision-useful insights for institutional investors and other senior stakeholders.
• Contribute to the development of innovative frameworks for understanding structural shifts in inflation, labor markets, productivity, fiscal dynamics, and monetary policy transmission.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• A very strong background in macroeconomics with a focus on what in central bank terms is described as Research and Statistics.
• Strong judgment around nowcasting, data filtering, and forecast construction, with proven ability to extract signal from noisy, revised, and partial data.
• Deep familiarity with the US economy and the nature of US macro data; familiarity with global data would be a plus but is not essential.
• Leading edge modelling skills, and a clear perspective on how AI/ML and alternative datasets can be incorporated to create a next generation forecasting process.
•  Ability to generate original research analysis covering both the cyclical and structural evolution of the US economy at a time of rapid change.
• The ability to move fluidly between technical analysis, policy interpretation, and broader macro narrative development.
• Intellectual independence, curiosity, and a desire to challenge conventional thinking and develop differentiated views.
• Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to interface with clients independently and proactively, translating analysis into clear, market-relevant insights.
• A proactive, energetic, and collegial orientation; this is a high-performance environment in which all members of a lean team are expected to contribute flexibly across the workload.

Expected Base Salary Range: $200,000 - $275,000

In addition to base salary, this role is eligible to receive a discretionary bonus paid in cash and/or deferred equity.  A significant portion of Director/Managing Director overall compensation is typically delivered through this variable component, which is determined based on firm, team, and individual performance.  While bonus amounts are not guaranteed and may vary year to year, total compensation for this role is intended to be competitive and should not be assessed on base salary alone.
