Group Description: The Global Policy and Central Bank Strategy team is a small group led by former policy practitioners who provide market-leading analysis of the intersection of macroeconomics, policy, and markets, with particular focus on the US, as well as other major developed economies. In recent years the team has consistently ranked number one for Washington Research in the Institutional Investor All-Star poll.
What is the position? Evercore ISI is looking for an experienced Policy Economist to join the firm’s Global Policy and Central Bank Strategy team based in Washington DC.

The Policy Economist will, among other responsibilities:
- Help develop the firm’s research analysis of the US and global economy and monetary policy;
- Work with the head of global central bank strategy to anticipate and analyze policy at the Federal Reserve as well as the ECB, BoE, BoJ and PBC;
- Over time lead the firm’s analysis of other G10 central banks;
- Contribute to analysis of financial stability policy;
- Develop fiscal policy analysis, collaborating with the head of US politics and policy on joint political-fiscal reports;
- Develop an independent portfolio of high-quality, thought-leading, thematic research on macro-policy questions and market this to clients;
- Generate bespoke research in response to client or internal firm requests;
- Help manage the Washington team’s research support associates in analyzing data, building models and developing charts;
- Work with the firm’s Sales team to manage client relationships and organize calls, webinars, and events.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A strong background in macroeconomics and public policy, particularly as it relates to monetary and fiscal policy. We recognize that many potential candidates will have a professional background in one of these policy areas but not the other and encourage applications in both cases
- Deep familiarity with the US economy and US policy is essential. It would be additionally desirable for the candidate to be familiar with global macro and international policy
- Solid modeling skills, with advanced modeling skills a further plus
- The candidate should have excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to translate economic analysis into clear, market-relevant calls
- The candidate must be proactive and energetic, with the ability to work both collaboratively in support of the team’s leaders and independently as a lead client-facing analyst. This is a high-pressure working environment and the Policy Economist will be part of a lean team in which all members are expected to be flexible
- Possess excellent computer skills (prior programming skills a plus) and knowledge of economics, econometrics, and finance. Above all, a strong work ethic with the ability to learn quickly is essential
Specific Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in economics/finance/public policy/business or a related field required; PhD welcome
- 7-15 years of experience in economic analysis and policy making. We have some flexibility in terms of required experience for candidates who have spent additional time in advanced graduate study including PhD programs. Experience at the Federal Reserve / other central bank, Treasury / other finance ministry, or the IMF a particular plus
- Willing to work long hours with an early start and some work at weekends / holidays
- Professional communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Strong technical/computer skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel required. Proficiency in programming languages, such as EViews, Stata, or SAS, a strong plus
- Expertise with macro models such as FRBUS and a solid grasp of basic modeling techniques
- Ability to work as part of a team to accomplish broader goals and objectives
